Graduate Student Essay Prizes

The following annual essay prizes are awarded to graduate students and often to recent graduates.

MRDS (Medieval and Renaissance Drama Society) Alexandra Johnston award: conference paper in early drama studies presented in the 12 months prior to deadline; winner receives cash award and one year membership to MRDS. Due 30 Jan.

SAIMS/TMJ essay prize: 8,000 word essay (inclusive of notes) on any topic related to Medieval Studies; winner receives a cash prize and consideration for publication in The Mediæval Journal. Due 28 March.

Review of English Studies essay prize: 10,000 word essay (inclusive of notes) on any topic related to English literature or language; winner receives a cash prize, a year’s subscription to RES, and consideration for publication in RES. Due 28 June.

GMS student essay prize: 4,000-6,000 word essay (inclusive of notes) on topics related to gender and/or sexuality; winner receives two years of free registration for the Gender and Medieval Studies conference (in the UK each year), a book credit, contribution toward travel to the GMS conference, and consideration for publication in Medieval Feminist Forum. Due 2 Sept.

SMFS graduate student essay prize: 8,000 word essay (exclusive of notes) on topics related to medieval women, gender, and sexuality; winner considered for publication in Medieval Feminist Forum, the journal for the Society for Medieval Feminist Scholarship. Due 1 Nov.

Medium Ævum essay prize: 6,500-8,000 word essay (inclusive of notes) on any medieval topic (but see recent winners); winner receives a cash prize, money for books, money for conference attendance, and consideration for publication in Medium Ævum. Due 1 Dec.
